Topic cluster
A topic cluster is a group of pieces — typically one in-depth "pillar" piece plus several shorter "sub-pieces" — that together cover the angles of a single broader topic.
Originally an SEO tactic (Google rewards depth of topical coverage), topic clusters work as a content-planning principle on any channel. Rather than one isolated post on a topic, the brand publishes a cluster of pieces from different angles: a pillar piece, three or four supporting pieces, and a closing piece. The cluster signals depth to both algorithms and audience.
Cluster planning is a strategic move, not a single-post decision. Tools that organise the library by cluster make repurposing and back-linking trivial; tools that don’t require the team to remember which posts belong to which thread.
Brands that own a topic cluster end up dominating the search and the conversation around that topic. Brands that publish one-off pieces on the topic get drowned out by the brands that clustered.
